City Manager Bio

Mike Flad is the City Manager for the City of South Gate.  He was appointed to the position in December of 2012. He currently provides leadership and direction for the South Gate community of 95,000 residents through the efforts of over 400 employees and a budget of $115 million dollars.

Public Administration Career

Mike began his career in public administration with the City of Burbank in 1988 working in a variety of positions within the Finance, Risk Management, Community Development, City Manager’s Office and Parks, Recreation and Community Services departments.

The majority of Mike’s professional career has been with the City of Burbank where he served for over 23 years. During that time, he was lured away from his hometown, briefly, to accept the number two post as Assistant City Manager with the City of Ukiah, in Northern California.

Actively involved in the communities he has served, Mike has been appointed to nearly 2 dozen committees and boards, including a few listed below:

Education

Mike is a graduate of UCLA, with a degree in Political Science emphasis in Public Administration/Public Law. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge. 


Personal Life


Mike was born, raised and educated in Burbank.  He currently lives in Burbank with his significant other, Cindy, daughter, Bella, and stepsons, Brandon, Alex and Ryan. In his spare time, Mike likes: spending time with his family at the beach in his RV and two dogs Zoey and Thor; going hiking; taking long bicycle rides; and playing his newly acquired passion, Pickleball.
