The City of South Gate maintains an active Code Enforcement Program which works together with residents and the business community to preserve clean and safe neighborhoods. The city has adopted codes that address property maintenance standards, which include:

  • Zoning
A variety of other codes provide direction in areas which may affect the quality of life for your neighbors and community. The goal is to eliminate blight which improves the appearance of commercial and residential areas.

Private Property Maintenance Violations


  • Discarded Furniture
  • Graffiti
  • Inoperable Vehicles
  • Landscaping
  • Trash and Debris
  • Other Violations that May Diminish Property Values

Building Maintenance Violations


  • Abandoned or Unfinished Buildings
  • Inadequate:
    • Electrical
    • Exits
    • Fire Protection
    • Maintenance
    • Mechanical
    • Plumbing
    • Sanitation
  • Unpainted Buildings

Improper Occupancies


  • Enclosed Patio Conversions
  • Garage Conversions
  • Illegal Divisions of Dwellings
  • Laundry Room Conversions
  • Rumpus Room Conversions
  • Storage Room Conversions
  • Any Other Types of Conversions

Non-Permitted Construction


Any type of construction done without first obtaining all required permits and approvals from the City of South Gate.

There are several ways to file a code enforcement complaint:
  • Call the Code Enforcement 24-hour Anonymous Hotline at 323-563-9598 or 323-563-9558.
  • Visit the Code Enforcement Division at City Hall (8650 California Avenue), Monday - Thursday, 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m (City Hall closes Fridays).
