The City experienced a brown water event on Sunday, January 10. Due to a traffic accident, a fire hydrant located at Garfield Ave./Sessler St. was sheared at approximately 2:15pm. This caused an increase in water velocity in the main lines serving the area around the hydrant. As a result, sediment was dislodged in the water lines, causing a number of residents to experience brown water.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded by shutting down the water line feeding the fire hydrant. The City responded by flushing the water system and performing door knocking to communicate with, and assist residents.
While the water still meets the safety standards established by local and State regulations, we do understand the discoloration is less than appeasing. If you are still experiencing discolored water, please run your water for a few minutes to flush out the remaining discolored water. If that does not resolve the issue, please contact the Department of Public Works at 323-563-5790. Customers who believe they may have incurred damages can file a claim with the City Clerk's Office at 323-563-9510.
We do apologize for this inconvenience caused. We are working towards more long term solutions to reduce the occurrence of such discoloration incidents.
