Council Experience

Gil Hurtado was first elected to the South Gate City Council in March 2005 and was re-elected for 4-year terms in 2009, 2013, 2020, and recently in 2024.  Gil served as Mayor in 2008, 2013 and 2024.  As a member of the City Council, he shares the responsibilities of the City Council to set policies and goals for the community.

Personal Life

Gil has been married to his wife, Lily, for 44 years. The couple made South Gate their home in 1984 and have raised their children here.  They have two children, a son and a daughter, who attended Bryson Elementary, South Gate Middle School, and South Gate High School. Gil’s son is now a CSI, while his daughter is an educator. He also has two grandchildren. 

Professional Experience/Volunteer Work

Gil has been very active in our community for many years. For nearly three decades, he served as president of the SGJAA and has volunteered as a coach, commissioner, and game official. He served one year as the head-coach of the South Gate High School Girls Basketball team and has been the JV Softball Coach for over a decade.

Awards and Honors 

  • 2014 Commission for South Gate Youth Lifetime Achievement Award
  • 2019 Elected as Grand Marshal for the Children’s Christmas Lane Parade

Hobbies and Interests

Gil encourages healthy living. He is a pescatarian, mainly due to his love of animals, and he continues to be physically active at the age of 64 by lifting weights and running 3-5 miles, daily. He participated in, and completed, 9 marathons. The first marathon he competed in was at the age of 45. He encourages education as a path to self-improvement and at the age of 59, he graduated, with Honors, from California State University, Dominguez Hills with a degree in Global Studies.
