City Clerk’s Office

The Office of the City Clerk maintains the city’s records management system as well as the legislative history of the city including the Municipal Code. The department also conducts municipal elections and as the official record keeper for the city, codifies ordinances, resolutions and contracts. The office maintains rosters, agendas, minutes and oaths for all employees, city boards, committees, and commissions.

City Council meeting agendas and approved meeting minutes can be viewed online or by visiting City Hall. Copies of these documents may also be obtained from the Clerk’s Office for a nominal fee. For your convenience, South Gate's Municipal Code is also available online.

The City of South Gate encourages public participation in local government through its advisory bodies. These are boards, commissions, committees, and task forces that deal with a variety of issues and makes recommendations to the City Council. Applicants must be city residents and registered city voters. All applications will be kept on file for 1 year. Forms are available online(PDF, 401KB) and also in the City Clerk’s Office.

APPOINTMENTS LIST

Pursuant to Government Code Section 54972, a Local Appointments List shall be prepared including regular and ongoing Commissions whose members serve at the pleasure of the South Gate City Council. Following is an open list of local appointive offices containing the incumbent appointees; dates of appointment; dates terms expire and the terms which will expire during the next calendar year.

PLANNING COMMISSION

The Planning Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the City Council to investigate and make recommendations on matters pertaining to a subdivision, zoning, parks and boulevards, beautification of the city and in general such other subjects that have to do with the orderly and consistent physical development of the city. Removal requires 4/5th vote of the City Council.

Regular meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, at 7:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers, 8650 California Avenue.

PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION

The Parks and Recreation Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the City Council with the primary purpose of gathering information, weighing public opinion, and examining issues to provide input on the leisure, recreational, social and cultural needs of the community. Projects include park improvements, field use, and community programs. Removal requires 4/5th vote of the City Council.

Regular meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of the month, at 7:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers, 8650 California Avenue.

CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION

The Civil Service Commission serves as an advisory body to the City Council and Personnel Officer with the primary purpose of hearing the appeals submitted by any classified employee relative to a disciplinary action, change of classification, dismissal, suspension, demotion or alleged violation. Removal requires 4/5th vote of the City Council.

Regular meetings are held as required in the Council Chambers, 8650 California Avenue.

CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Citizens Advisory Committee serves as an advisory body to the City Council with the primary purpose is to provide the city council with recommendation of how best to distribute community development block grant (CDBG) funds to various non-profit organizations operating and/or providing services to resident of the City and to CDBG funded City programs. Each Council Member appoints four members to the Commission. Removal requires 4/5th vote of the City Council.

Regular meetings are held as needed in the Council Chambers, 8650 California Avenue.

TWEEDY MILE ADVISORY BOARD

The Tweedy Mile Advisory Board serves as an advisory body to the City Council with the primary purpose is to make recommendations to the City Council on the expenditure of revenues derived from the levy assessments on proposed improvements and activities and on the method and basis of levying assessments. Members are appointed on staggering terms (1, 2, 3 years respectively).

Regular meetings are held on the 1st Monday of the month, at 6:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers, 8650 California Avenue.

When are City Council meetings held?

Meetings are held every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers located in City Hall, 8650 California Avenue, South Gate. Agendas are available online and at the City Clerk’s Office. Most Recent City Council Agenda

How can I find out what is on the agenda for a particular City Council meeting?

Agendas are posted in accordance with and in compliance with Brown Act requirements. Agendas for regularly scheduled city council meetings are posted at least 72 hours before the meeting. The City Council agenda is posted at the two posting boards outside City Hall and at both the Weaver Library and the Hollydale Library. The complete agenda packet is posted online the Thursday prior to the upcoming City Council meeting and in the City Clerk’s Office.

If I go to a City Council meeting how do I address the council?

At every Regular City Council meeting there is "Comments from the Audience." During this time, members of the public and staff may address the City Council regarding any items within the subject matter jurisdiction of the City Council. Comments from the audience will be limited to 3 minutes per speaker unless authorized by the Mayor. There will be no debate or action on items not listed on the agenda unless authorized by law. How do I get a copy of the City Council meeting minutes?

Minutes are posted online or can be requested at the City Clerk’s Office as soon as they are approved by the City Council at a regularly scheduled Council Meeting. All Agendas and Minutes 

Is there a fee for city records?
