Long Beach Boulevard Street Improvements

Public Outreach - LS Rendering_final.jpg

The Long Beach Boulevard Improvements project is being implemented to enhance safety, traffic circulation, address deferred maintenance issues, and beautify the corridor.  In the recent past, residents expressed concerns over the inaccessibility of pedestrian push buttons due to the newly installed cobble stones next to curb ramps.  Please know this was a temporary condition that has now been eliminated because the new pedestrian push buttons have now been installed away from the cobblestones.   Further, the cobble stones are not designed to be walked on.  The were installed in areas not intended for pedestrians that are not ADA accessible.  Cobble stones are an industry practice to designate “non-walkable” surface adopted by both Caltrans and the City of Los Angeles.

The total budget is $10.6 Million. Construction began on September 11, 2023. Construction activities will include the use of heavy equipment, traffic control, lane closures, and will temporarily impact parking. Some construction activities will impact noise levels, such as during concrete removals.Construction activities will be scheduled to minimize impacts where feasible. Construction signage will be placed with sufficient time to provide information needed to accommodate parking conditions.  Construction is in progress and planned for substantially completion in July 2024. Recent achieved milestones include installing safety island at Santa Ana Street, pedestrian push buttons on curb ramps and installing cobble stones in the new medians. Currently, the contractor continues installing flashing beacons, conduit crossing for irrigation controllers, and street grinding for the upcoming final paving operations.

The City would like to remind the public that for reasons of safety, motorist are required to use caution and reduce speeds when driving through construction work zones.  There are major projects under construction on Garfield Ave and Long Beach Blvd.  To minimize impact to the general public, these corridors remain open to traffic meanwhile construction is under way.  Roadway and in-progress improvements are protected with traffic control to raise awareness and for roadway safety.  In-progress improvements such as the new road medians on Long Beach Blvd are safe to drive along, however, remain to be improvements with soil and landscaping.  Motorists are reminded to use caution.
