Universal Waste Systems (UWS) is honored to support the future of South Gate by awarding scholarshipsto environmentally-conscious high school students in South Gate.

Scholarship Criteria and Essay Format

Essay Subject:

Environmental Sustainability & Me

The essay shall include:  

1. Your understanding of a specific environmental sustainability issue.
2. Your vision for what can be done to address the issue.
3. Identify specific individual and/or community actions including practical and financial considerations.
4. Describe methods in which individuals and/or communities can be inspired to take action, including ways of reaching and engaging them.
5. How you will take action personally.

Eligibility

The scholarship opportunity is open to:

• High school students
• Who reside within City of South Gate limits

Scholarship Awards

• UWS will award a combined total $10,000 in scholarships to five high school students that reside in the City of South Gate.
• UWS will award a total five (5) scholarships, totaling $2,000 each.
• UWS will present the scholarships to students at a formal presentation in the Spring of 2025 (details to follow). 

Submission Guidelines

• Only one essay per student shall be submitted.
• Essays must be between 400-500 words in length, typewritten and double spaced.  Entries must be original, unpublished essays written solely by the contestants.
• Entries shall be emailed  to: Michelle Newsham (michelle@uwscompany.com) and Shelley Billik (shelleybillik@uwscompany.com) with the subject line “2024-2025 South Gate Scholarship Program.”  
• All entries must include your full name, email address, home address, phone number, grade level, school name, the College you will/or plan to attend, and the name of your parent(s) and/or legal guardian(s).
